Navy Seal Hk416 - After a photo of a Virginia training seal went viral, people wanted to know about the custom rifle Here's what we found
Yesterday we posted some incredible shots of Navy SEALs and SWCC working with Army Nightstalkers on the beach near Dam Neck, Virginia. You can view these images here It didn't take long for our mailboxes to fill up with inquiries about SEALs, reports from SEAL Team Six, a unit with an inadequately small arsenal, continued training missions on highly modified MHs. -6 Little Bird and MH-60 Blackhawk So, we did some research and we found out that they are truly unique, at least when it comes to the US military and AR-15/M4/M16 pattern rifles.

From what we can tell through photos taken by aerial photographer Raven Harris, the rifle's uppers are from AR-15 maker Novask in Grants Pass, Oregon. Novsk has a reputation that is associated with fiction in the firearms community and it should come as no surprise that SEAL Team Six would reach out to him to fill some of the infamous armory team's needs. Between 2007 and 2020, the U.S. Navy awarded Naviske multiple contracts worth about $4.9 million, according to records available through the federal procurement database system. The deal was made through various offices within the service with the Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane Division in Indiana, which over the years has developed a variety of specialized weapons for the Naval Special Warfare Command.
Navy Seal Underway: Boarding Unit
The entire upper assembly of the rifle, including the barrel, gas block and tube, handguard/rail system, upper receiver, charging handle, forward assist, dust cover, and bolt carrier group, looks like a Novsk 10.5″ Gen III. is equivalent to Short Top, which you can check out on their website here Specs are top-notch and include a machine-made upper receiver and Novsk's highly reliable stainless steel barrel, which has a reputation for extreme accuracy.

A 10.5" barrel length is common for SEALs, and especially SEAL Team Sixes, who perform counter-terrorism roles in urban missions, naval operations, and underground structures. What was the need of the Naval Special Warfare community developed? The Mk 18, its Also known as the Close Quarters Bat Receiver (CQBR) with a 10.3" barrel. Other units of the United States Special Operations Forces, as well as other elements within the Navy and Coast Guard, later adopted these guns.
The HK 416s used by SEAL Team Six in the raid on Bin Laden that made the gun famous used a 10.4" barrel. Unlike these weapons, the Novsk setup uses a direct engagement (DI) system, differentiating the action that uses pistons, just like Eugene Stoner's. Where things get a little off is the low receivers These weapons do not appear to feature Novsk's bullet design, but instead feature a traditional mesh receiver. They may still be Novuscar, but they don't make the typical matching billet upper lower receiver sets you see on the commercial market. Regardless, there is no reason to have a billet upper and forged lower combined It's also possible that Seal armorers combined Novsk uppers with custom, fully built-out lowers, which would include a custom trigger and fire control group.
Regardless, the lower receivers appear to be setup with an ambidextrous bolt assist/release and flared/raised trigger guard. The latter of which is a common feature that makes gloved users more easily positioned. The lower is finished with a Magpul SL-K carbine stock and clear 30-round magazines from the Lancer system, some of which are blue train safe types and designed for simmunitions and similar non-lethal simulations. A dead air silencer Sandman is attached to the Novsk stainless steel barrel end. The laser pointer/illuminator system on the forward upper hand guard rail is the L3Harris AN/PEQ-15 Advanced Target Pointer Illuminator Aiming Laser (ATPIAL). What appears to be an Eyepoint Micro T2 red dot optic mounted on a Scalar Works mount on the flat top receiver. Other operators are seen with EOTech XPS holographic sights Beyond that, there are subtle differences between rifle groups, with vertical foregrips and Enforce WML weapon lights attached to some SEAL weapons. Even the stock on one is different, some don't have a good bolt assist/release, the basic grip seems different with the HK416 and Hogue overmold style. These variations are likely due to operator personal preference, but overall, the primary weapons of operators within the seal groups shown in the photographs are relatively similar.
So, what is the price of one of these seal approved rifles? Well, if you put one together at list price it'll run about $5,500, all said and done.

The CQBR and MK18 series rifles are extremely reliable and the OG of the modern super short carbine. The Navy has developed this platform for its elite fighter, SEAL, and VBS teams, Navy EOD teams, and others. The MK18 uses a shorter 10.3-inch barrel, which harkens back to the Colt Commando series of rifles. 10.5 is the least known barrel length for 5.56 caliber AR series rifles.
