I was young, so I got well quickly. A trip to the supply sergeant got me a new ruck, this one with all the necessary equipment. This was my rude introduction to my former friend, ALICE.
ALICE was milspeak for a multipurpose lightweight individual wearable. It was great for his day. Introduced in January 1973, the ALICE replaced the canvas M-1956 individual load-carrying equipment and the M-1967 modernized load-carrying equipment that served the United States Armed Forces during the Vietnam War.

ALICE gear was made of nylon instead of cotton and was later much more robust in wet and humid environments. Individual pouches attached via standardized zippers. ALICE has equipped the US armed forces well for a quarter of a century.
MOLLE (modular lightweight load carrying equipment) is pronounced "Molly" and first hit the streets in 1997. It was not until the 911 that it became widely used. The basis of the MOLLE system is PALS. In a military that is simply drunk on acronyms, PALS stands for Pouch Attachment Ladder System. MOLLE is a complete system. PALS is the nylon strap that makes everything work. Sometimes called "MOLLE webbing". Now, some 25 years after its introduction, if all that PALS fabric were to suddenly fall apart, the entire American war machine would simply fall to pieces. Those things are everywhere.
The PALS ribbon shown on this sign carrier is elegant and simple. Uniform nylon straps sewn at regular intervals allow almost everything to be secured where needed.
And with good reason. The PALS strip is the most inspired human invention since the flush toilet. Shocking in its simplicity, PALS is nothing more than a mesh formed from 1" nylon webbing sewn at 1" intervals 1.5" apart. With this as a basis, almost any object imaginable can be attached to the human form.

So much has changed since I wore the uniform in the 80s and 90s. Back then, we were all expected to be uniformed and configured identically. Today, modularity is the modern military gospel. Things need to be flexible so they can be configured to best suit the individual and his or her mission. I think it's better now.

Please forgive me for taking this discussion to its limits. The heart of MOLLE is the TAP that replaced the FLC that could be mounted on an IOTV or SPCS. To translate all of this to normal humans, the Tactical Assault Panel replaced the Combat Load Carrier mounted on either an improved outer tactical vest or a soldier plate carrier system. Once fully configured, this rig could hold up to eight STANAG 30 round M4s and all the other crap needed to keep a soldier pumped and going on the modern battlefield.

PALS webbing has found its way into many applications beyond MOLLE gear. The stuff is suitable for civilian backpacks, tote bags, survival vests, body armor and more. Military specifications for GI-related PALS are extensive, expensive, and precise. This is not the case with many civilian products. However, there is usually enough slack in the system to accommodate this.
Bags of virtually every shape and size usually have their own PALS strap on the back, complete with Natick button straps. This is simply a reinforced nylon band with a button at the bottom. Similar commercial options include Blackhawk Quick Release Buckles, MALICE Straps, Maxpedition TacTie Soft Straps, and MOLLE LOK Rigid Straps and associated fasteners.
Like most things, there is a right and wrong way to use PALS webbing on MOLLE gear. If you're a first-time user of MOLLE and PALS, you'll always be tempted to just thread the tie strap through the PALS host strap, snap it into place, and call it good. However, Uncle Sam's MOLLE Tech Manual clearly states that the correct way to attach gear to your PALS webbing is to painstakingly thread the button strap through both the pouches and main gear webbing and move it back and forth. to be in place. It takes a minute, but this way the bag will stay strong and secure until the sun burns out.

Equipment can be targeted and arranged for easy access according to the user's specific preferences and personality. Apparently uniformity isn't as important as it used to be these days.
The US Army's newest version of its modular carry gear is aptly named "MOLLE II," but uses the same standard PALS webbing. Compatible commercial products can be based on a variety of strap designs, some of which feature a Velcro surface as well as a laser-cut plate of rugged mounting hardware. Everything is compatible with standard PALS equipment.
From the CAR-15 and M-1956 LBE to today's M4 and MOLLE II, the equipment of American soldiers has evolved to meet modern demands.

All these things make me feel old. ALICE was my first affair, and now MOLLE has stolen my heart. This advanced payload contains more technology than the space shuttle and performs like a champ. It is a fight for the information age.

The ALICE Pack system retains the concept of separate Fighting and Existence payloads that was perfected during the development of the LCE in the mid-1950s. A key point in the concept of combat and subsistence costs is that the infantry gunner should carry only what is necessary to accomplish the immediate mission. The load carried by the infantry marksman must not contain any other items that can be carried in any other way. Because the type of mission, terrain, and environmental conditions will affect clothing and individual equipment requirements, the unit commander may prescribe essential items to the infantry marksman.
