Navy Seal Gun - After photos of Navy SEALs training in waters off Virginia surfaced, people wondered what kind of guns they were carrying. Here's what we found.

Yesterday we posted some incredible photos of SEALs and SWCC working with Army night submarines off the coast near Damnneck, Virginia. You can see the images here. It wasn't long before our inboxes were flooded with inquiries about SEALs reportedly from SEAL Team Six, a unit with an unparalleled arsenal of small arms that they carry out in a heavily modified MH Training Mission: 6 Little Birds and MH-60 Black. A hawk. So we did some research and here are the results. they are truly unique, at least when it comes to US military and AR-15/M4/M16 style rifles.

As seen in the pictures we got via aerial photographer Raven Harris, the rifle's uppers are from AR-15 maker Noveske in Grants Pass, Oregon. Noveske has an almost legendary reputation in the firearms world, and it's no surprise that SEAL Team Six's famous armorers reach to them for some of the team's needs. Between 2007 and 2020, the U.S. Navy awarded Noveske multiple contracts worth nearly $4.9 million, according to records provided by the Federal Acquisition Database System. The deals come from various service offices, including the Indiana-based Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane Division, which over the years has built a number of specialized small arms for the Naval Special Warfare Command.

The complete upper assembly of the rifle, including the barrel, gas block and tube, handguard/rail system, upper receiver, charging handle, forward support, dust cover, and bolt carrier assembly, appears to be similar to Noveske's The 10.5-inch Gen III- in identical to Shorty Upper, which you can check out on their website. Specifications are top-notch, including a machined billet upper receiver and one of Noveske's highly regarded stainless steel barrels, known for extreme accuracy.

A 10.5-inch barrel length is common for SEALs, especially SEAL Team Six, who conduct counterterrorism missions in urban terrain, on ships, and even in underground structures. What the Naval Special Warfare community demanded was the production of the Mk 18, also known as the Close Combat Receiver (CQBR), which has a 10.3-inch barrel. Other US special operations forces, as well as other units of the Navy and Coast Guard, later adopted the rifles.

The HK 416, used by SEAL Team Six in the attack on Osama bin Laden, used the 10.4-inch barrel that made the gun famous. Unlike guns that operate through a piston mechanism, the Noveske mechanism uses a direct impact (DI) system, such as: Eugene · Eugene Stoner's original design, and later the M16, CAR-15, and M4. You can read more about the AR-15 style rifle piston vs. DI debate here.

Where it's a little different is the lower receiver. Instead of Noveske's billet design, these guns appear to have a more traditional forged receiver. They may still be from Noveske, but they don't make the usual matching billet upper and lower receiver assemblies we see on the commercial market. Regardless, there's no reason a billet and forged top can't go together. SEAL body armor can also attach the Noveske upper to their custom, fully assembled lower, which includes a custom trigger and fire control group.

Regardless, the lower receiver appears to be equipped with a smart bolt assist/release and a flared/fixed trigger guard. The latter is a common feature and is easier to adapt to users with gloves. The lower section is equipped with a Magpul SL-K carbine stock and Lancer Systems 30-round clear magazines, some of which are blue practice safety types for Simunitions and similar non-lethal simulation training ammo loaded in the stock.

At the end of the Noveske stainless steel barrel is a Sandman with a dead gas suppressor. The laser designator/illuminator system mounted on the forward front guard rail is the L3Harris AN/PEQ-15 Advanced Target Designator Illuminator Aring Laser (ATPIAL). The top of the flat top receiver looks like an Aimpoint Micro T2 red dot optic mounted on a Scalarworks Leap mount. Other operators use EOTech XPS holographic sights. Other than that, there are minor differences between the rifle kits, such as the vertical foregrip and the INFORCE WML weapon light that is attached to some of the SEAL weapons. One even has different stocks, some do not have the attached screw assist/release, and the main grips appear to be different, including the HK416 and Hogue overmolded styles. These differences may be due to the personal preferences of the operators, but in general, the primary weapons of the operators are relatively uniform among the SEALs seen in the photographs.

So how much is one of these SEAL-approved rifles worth? Well, if you throw one together for the list price, that's about $5,500.

Not cheap, but for those who really use this stuff in the highest threat environments and most extreme situations imaginable, it's a bargain. The M4A1 Carbine is the primary weapon used by SEAL operators. It is a shorter, more compact version of the M16A2 rifle designed for US special operations forces. In 1994, the US Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) and the Navy developed the Special Operations Command (SOPMOD) M4A1 Accessory Kit to make this weapon exceptional in terms of versatility, lethality and effectiveness. The M4A1 is a high-tech, multi-role assault rifle that allows operators to configure multiple combinations of advanced optics, lasers and illumination systems to quickly and accurately acquire targets, day or night. It fires in both semi-automatic and automatic modes and is effective against both close and long-range targets. The M4A1 excels in close combat and counter-terrorism operations. It fires a high-velocity 5.56mm round, which is essential when dealing with terrorists wearing body armor or body armor. This rifle can also be quickly and easily converted to a grenade launcher or shotgun.

2005-2010 Integrated carabiners. The SOPMOD Block 3 upgrade will result in a more streamlined M4A1 carbine called the Integrated Carbine. It will incorporate all of the improvements made to the M4A1 Carbine, moving optics and lasers from weapon to weapon into the weapon itself, and will offer thermal sighting. Mode switches and buttons will be integrated into the vertical handle to activate lasers, thermal imaging and other sights and visible light. The thermal targeting component will likely be able to communicate with the Joint Surveillance and Target Attack Radar System (JSTARS).

This unique set of modifications and accessories allows the operator to customize his weapon for specific operational or mission conditions. It consists of optical sights, night vision, laser sight and/or lights that can be mounted on the top or side rails of the weapon. The kit also has a tube that converts the weapon into a grenade launcher or shotgun.
