Mp22 Compact Review - Back in June, I wrote a post about my search for the perfect compact 22 pistol that I could pair with my new Silencerco Sparrow rimfire suppressor. Not particularly satisfied with any of the current production options, I ended up with the now defunct and obscure S&W Model 2213. I've had more time to shoot pistols since writing that post, and that's okay. However, that still doesn't fully analyze the Compact 22's ignition.
It turns out that what I was really looking for wasn't officially released for a few months: the Smith & Wesson M&P22 Compact. When I first heard about this pistol, I was not very impressed. I handled the full size M&P 22 that came out a few years ago, and I wasn't very impressed. The trigger isn't great, and has that "toy" feel that I've complained about in 22 other pistol reviews. Not surprisingly, the contract to manufacture the full-size M&P was awarded to Walther, whose 22 pistols did not have a particularly solid reputation.

In contrast, the new M&P 22 Compact is made in-house by Smith & Wesson, and has a durable aluminum slide. That caught my attention. If you've watched many of the past videos here in the lounge, you've probably noticed that I'm a big fan of full size pistols and 9mm M&P pistols, so I'm right at home with their controls and layout. M&P series. I could get used to the 22 M&P if it is as good as its center fire cousins. So let's see what we have...

Like most .22 LR pistols, the M&P 22 fires 10-round magazines, two of which are rifled. It doesn't have the adjustable rear stock of other M&P double-barreled pistols, but on a light rimfire that detail doesn't matter.
There are white three-dot sights, but the rear is fully adjustable for height and windage, which is always nice to see on a 22. I plan to turn off the rear dots, and may replace the front with one. Red thread eye sights from Dawson Precision. If not, I'll probably take advantage of the front accessory rail and try powering it with one of the Crimson Trace Railmaster lasers because… “Pew Pew” laser beams!
Speaking of "pew pew," the M&P 22 Compact comes with a factory threaded muzzle, which is covered by a barrel cap. This fact could easily be missed if you weren't looking for it because Smith & Wesson failed to include mention of a threaded barrel in the owner's manual, nor did they provide the proper size wrench to remove the barrel cap. After much cursing and gnashing of teeth, I managed to loosen the cap by adjusting a small bore I had from another threaded pistol.
You may notice that I haven't included any close-ups of the barrel cap, and that's because it's not exactly the image I had to remove. This has been replaced by a threaded adapter, which is required if you want to attach a suppressor or other muzzle device. I ordered EWK Arms to extend and change the M&P's 3/8”x24 threads to a standard 1/2”x28.
Review: Smith & Wesson M&p22 Compact
Same shape feature and included centerfire M&Ps. The original compact shares the same dimensions as the full-size M&P, with a shorter barrel/slide and shorter grip. The Compact 22, on the other hand, has the same proportions as the full size, but is reduced in size by 15%. The result is a pistol that is closer in size and feel to the M&P single-layer shield than any other M&P version. At 15.3 ounces, it's slightly lighter than the Shield's 19 ounces, and I really wish it was a few more ounces to help stabilize it on longer shots.
That said, I like the overall size. It's short enough for people with very small hands, but the grip is long enough for the average person to keep all their fingers on the board. The 3.56-inch barrel is long enough to provide a decent field of view, but not too long for its light weight.
I'm not sure why rimfire pistols always seem to be loaded with unnecessary safeties, but the M&P 22 Compact is no exception. It has a hand operated thumb safety based on the optional thumb safety found on standard M&P pistols. It's large, easy to use and unobtrusive, especially if you're used to a 1911-style thumb safety.
It's really not a problem. The safety I am against is a magazine cut safety with an internal safety "lock" that uses a small key to disable the pistol. I've already expressed my thoughts on the S&W's internal pistol lock, and I can't think of any reason it would be better suited to a semi-auto. As for the magazine being cut, I think it makes the gun

Safe If I dry carry the pistol for practice, I don't want a magazine in the gun if possible. Requiring a magazine to be present provides one more opportunity for circulation and inadvertently ending up in a chamber when it should be empty. But, you know...lawyers and stuff.
Well, lame safety features aside, I still think the M&P 22 Compact is a nice little clipper, which was confirmed after taking it to the range. The trigger breaks at about 6 pounds, which is about the same as the latest and improved M&P triggers. 22 compact when handling and shooting, it's fine
Like the M&P, though it has a slightly different shape than any other pistol in the lineup. Accuracy wasn't too bad either. As I said in the Sig P938-22 review, these lightweight .22 LR pistols are no substitute for traditional target pistols, but for what they're worth, I'd rather shoot 20-inch groups. There was no problem. yards using match grade ammo and bench rest.
When using the M&P 22 Compact as a self-defense training tool, my one complaint is the slide lock clamp. Lefties will immediately notice that it's not as stiff as the original M&P pistol, but even as a right-handed user, I didn't find it particularly useful for reloading. The slide joints on my other M&P pistols were stiff at first, but after the first two hundred rounds they all loosened up. The lever on the 22 Compact can't be moved like it was out of the box - at this point I can't force it down past the slide lock without involving several fingers. I think this is just another argument for the proponents of the "power stroke" reloading method.

In reality, the M&P 22 Compact is less likely to be used as a serious learning tool but more likely as a fun gun and something for new shooters to start with. This means it will often have a suppressor that looks right at home on the M&P 22 Compact. For the Silencerco Sparrow, it seems as quiet as any full-sized rimfire suppressor I can remember. I also found that, at least for the loads I tested, the short barrel didn't give the high velocity 22 ammo a chance to get the bullet at high velocity, meaning that most of the factory ammo would remain quiet and low for users suppressing it. must
Since the .22 LR is not yet available, I didn't run several bricks of ammo through the small M&P for review like I wanted to. However, I did manage to salvage a few boxes from the warehouse's junk box disposal list. I fired about 300 rounds of CCI mini mags (after sifting through the broken remains of small plastic CCI boxes looking for rounds that weren't broken beyond recognition) followed by Federal Competition round noses. A few valuable journals and some of Eli's bottoms.
Then, going into the target grade 22 supply I've gone for review, I also tested a box of Federal Gold Medal targets and Wolf Match Targets for accuracy, both with the excellent results I mentioned earlier. . With nothing more than a few drops of oil on the slide rails, the M&P 22 Compact went through over 500 rounds straight out of the box without a single malfunction to speak of – no small feat for a standard .22LR rifle.
